Sir Peter Ustinov

Sir Peter Ustinov died yesterday.

It’s sad when such a talented person leaves us. He was a fabulous raconteur and gifted actor. He seemed to make things look effortless…

I remember hearing his “audience with….” on the radio.

Ustinov’s account of his first day at school had me howling with laughter…

"When I came into my first classroom at the age of 6, there was a large oleograph of Jesus Christ holding a Boy Scout by the hand...

...and pointing out the extent of the British Empire on the map.

As a small foreign boy I was outraged by this."

You need his wit and delivery to make it really work.

But is still cracks me up !

Here’s An Audience with Peter Ustinov from 1988. Well worth a watch.

Bband

Ha Ha !!!!! Just signed up for broadband….*yay* The internet will be lightning quick from now on. Should have done this blooomin’ ages ago !

Also bought a natty little pasta machine today…… hopelessly bourgeois !!!! Fresh pasta here I come.

McShit….

McShit

McDonald’s have decided to launch a range of children’s clothes. Huh !? They do burgers and chips, not kids clothes ! Bet GAP Kids are scared….!

They’re gonna to call it The McKids range. Have they not seen the McShit t-shirts….! The irony must be totally lost on these people. I wonder what sizes they’ll offer the range in….. xxxx large ?

Gotta laugh. I’m Lovin’ It !

today's weather...today's weather...

Oh My God…..

Oh My God…… Less than 3 months after setting up my video editing suite I’ve got my first paid filming job. Oh yes, oh wow….. 2 days filming at cinemas and a day or so of editing. Over the flipping moon…..

triple celebration

Had a wonderful triple celebration today – my brother’s 31’s, mother’s day and my mother’s retirement. The family got together and we had a great meal last night and fantastic sunday lunch today.

On Saturday, I picked up some cool rocket balloons for the kids which turned out to be a total disaster. My little nephew, who’s only 2, got totally scared as soon as we started to blow them up. Poor little fella went mad…. Turned out he was paranoid about them going pop. Seems he was at a kids party where the balloons popped and scared the shit out of him ! Weird thing was that once the balloons were blown up and tied off he was fine and ran around with them no problem. It was just inflating them that freaked him out…. we had to can the balloons sharpish !

Otherwise, my bro and I had a crack at being car mechanics again. The car has an intermittent revving issue. Some times it revs like mad, even when you take your foot off the accelerator ! Weird….

We’ve taken it to a mechanic, craftily called out the AA and even replaced the accelerator cable ourselves ! But the bugger still revs…. Most of the time it’s fine, but every now and again it revs like a bastard. God knows why ! We fiddled, but couldn’t work it out. Damn annoying !

Italian Cooking

Browsing through Borders bookshop earlier I snapped up a real gem ! Italia in Cucina. The Complete Book of Traditional Italian Cooking. 800 pages of fabulous recipes…. Am I in heaven now !

It’s a richly illustrated guide to Italian herbs and spices, vegetables, pasta and cheeses. Ham, breads, sausages and seafood… it’s all there. How to make fresh pasta, classic tomato sauce, focacce, pizza, calzoni, gnocchi, crepes, risotto and polenta. Wonderful cakes, cream desserts, fruit puddings, fritters and ice cream to die for.

Oh why do I have to go to work tomorrow… I just want to cook Italian food all week….

The Economist

I’m a big fan of the Economist and have read it on and off for 10 years. Here are a few interesting snippets from this week’s edition….

– In 1998 Jose replaced Michael as the most popular name for new born boys in both California and Texas

– From 1950 to 2002 almost 11,000 claims of sexual abuse were brought against nearly 4,400 Catholic priests in America

– The State of California is issuing a $15 billion bond which will buy the state a breathing space by allowing it to refinance its deficits of the past 3 years. Some $14 billion in past borrowing falls due in June. The state will however have to close a ‘structural’ gap between spending and revenues which could amount to $4 billion in the 2004-2005 fiscal year.

– John Kerry speaks French (in the current climate this may prove an electoral disadvantage !)

– The Germans are choosing a new federal president. The post is ceremonial and finding the right candidate has always proved difficult. Theodor Heuss, the first president, was considered a master, who spoke often about the Nazi past. His successor, Heinrich Lubke, was a failure (one speech in Africa began “ladies, and gentlemen, dear negroes”).

– In January this year 100 people were killed in drug-related violence in Mexico.

– America has recently launched a Greater Middle East Initiative which Arab leaders have greeted with near universal scorn….

Spain

This morning, ten bombs went off in Madrid killing 190 people and wounding more than 1,200. The carnage is unimaginable. I’ve just been watching the news bulletins and it looks truly awful.

Who would do such a thing…. It’s an appalling loss of life. Think of all those people with fathers, mothers, sisters, brothers, friends, colleagues and partners who won’t come home tonight. God, it’s awful….

Programme of the Communist Party of the Soviet Union. 1961

My Dad was clearing out the attic the other day and was about to throw out a box of old books and pamphlets.

I asked him to put them aside so I could take a quick look and was amazed at what I found…..

He went to Russia in 1961 when he was 21, where he picked up an English translation of the ‘Programme of the Communist Party of the Soviet Union. Adopted by the 22nd Congress of the C.P.S.U. October 31, 1961’.

Fascinated, I had a flick through….

It opens with the infamous slogan, “Workers of all countries, unite !”.

To get an idea of it’s lunacy, here’s the contents…. what on earth were they thinking !

VII. The party in the Period of Full-Scale Communist Construction

The programme ends with a rousing message to the people:

"We are for communism!" It is not through war with other countries, but by the example of a more perfect organisation of society, by rapid progress in developing the productive forces, the creation of all conditions for the happiness and well-being of man, that the ideas of communism win the minds and hearts of the masses.

The forces of social progress will inevitably grow in all countries, and this will assist the builders of communism, in the Soviet Union.

The Party proceeds from the Marxist-Leninist proposition: history is made by the people, and communism is a creation of the people, of its energy and intelligence. The victory of communism depends on people, and communism is built for people. Every Soviet man brings the triumph of communism nearer by his labour. The successes of communist construction spell abundance and. a happy life to all, and enhance the might, prestige and glory of the Soviet Union.

The Party is confident that the Soviet people will accept the new Programme of the C.P.S.U. as their own vital cause, as the greatest purpose of their life and as a banner of nation-wide struggle for the building of communism. The Party calls on all Communists, on the entire Soviet people - all working men and women, collective farmers and workers by brain - to apply their energies to the successful fulfillment of the historic tasks set forth in this Programme.

UNDER THE TRIED AND TESTED LEADERSHIP OF THE COMMUNIST PARTY, UNDER THE BANNER OF MARXISM-LENINISM. THE SOVIET PEOPLE HAVE BUILT SOCIALISM.

UNDER THE LEADERSHIP OF THE PARTY, UNDER THE BANNER OF MARXISM-LENINISM, THE SOVIET PEOPLE WILL BUILD COMMUNIST SOCIETY.

THE PARTY SOLEMNLY PROCLAIMS: THE PRESENT GENERATION OF SOVIET PEOPLE SHALL LIVE IN COMMUNISM !

Imagine the poor old CIA analysts who had to interpret that lot….. No wonder the cold war went on so long !

Another thing my Dad had was a rather wacky 1960 pamphlet titled, The Heart, Mind and Soul of Communism and the Christian Answer.

It was written by an Australian and published in South Africa… phew !
