Starz In Their Eyes

I really like Starz In Their Eyes by Just Jack. It’s catchy, clever and actually says something….

They’ll be making sure you stay amused
They’ll fill you up with drugs and booze
Maybe you’ll make the evening news

And when you’re tripping over your dreams
They’ll keep you down by any means
and by the end of the night you’ll be stifling your screams

Since you became a VIPerson
It’s like your problems have all worsened
Your paranoia casts aspersions
On the truths you know

And they’ll just put you in the spotlight
And hope that you’ll do alright
Or maybe not

Now why do you wanna go and put starz in their eyes?
Why do you wanna go and put starz in their eyes?
So why do you wanna go and put starz in their eyes?
Now why do you wanna go and put starz in their eyes?
Starz in their eyes?

Remember they said you’d show them all
Emphasise the rise but not the fall
And now you’re playing a shopping mall

Your mum and dad they can’t believe
What you appear to have achieved
While the rest of these users are just laughing in their sleeves

Since you became a VIPerson
It’s like your problems have all worsened
Your paranoia casts aspersions
On the truths you know

And now the tabloids use your face
To document your fall from grace
And then they’ll tell you that that’s just the way it goes
That’s just the way it goes

Now why do you wanna go and put starz in their eyes?
It’s the same old story well they just didn’t realise
And it’s a long way to come from the dog and duck karaoke machine
And Saturday night’s drunken dreams

Now why do you wanna go and put starz in their eyes?
It’s the same old story well they just didn’t realise
And it’s a long way to come from your private bedroom dance routines
And Saturday night’s drunken dreams

Now why do you wanna go and put starz in their eyes?
Why do you wanna go and put starz in their eyes?
So why do you wanna go and put starz in their eyes?
Now why do you wanna go and put starz in their eyes?
Starz in their eyes?

Now why do you wanna go and put starz in their eyes?
It’s the same old story well they just didn’t realise
And it’s a long way to come from the dog and duck karaoke machine
And Saturday night’s drunken dreams

John Peel

John PeelJohn Peel died today. I was genuinely saddened when I heard the news.

He has been DJ’ing on Radio One for longer than I’ve been alive. I remember his legendary sessions in the 80s and 90s and more recently have been waking up on Saturday mornings to his dry wit on Home Truths.

He will be sorely missed…

The Jackson Five

I’ve had a bit of a Jackson Five thing going on recently. Just love their mix of funky pop-soul. Have been listening to loads of their hits from the 70s. I’ll be There, I Want You Back, ABC and the awesome Can you Feel It !

Number one ?

What were all the number one songs in 1966 or 1973, or 1981 or even 1986 ? You can find out here and download the MP3s too. Every number one song from 1965 to 1988 available as a download. That’s just fantastic !

At Seventeen

I’ve had a schmaltzy little song humming around inside my head today…. Dunno why, not even sure where it came from.

It’s At Seventeen by Janis Ian. Here’s the lyrics….

I learned the truth at seventeen
That love was meant for beauty queens
And high school girls with clear skinned smiles
Who married young and then retired.
The valentines I never knew
The Friday night charades of youth
Were spent on one more beautiful
At seventeen I learned the truth.
And those of us with ravaged faces
Lacking in the social graces
Desperately remained at home
Inventing lovers on the phone
Who called to say come dance with me
and murmured vague obscenities
It isn’t all it seems
At seventeen.
A brown eyed girl in hand me downs
Whose name I never could pronounce
said, Pity please the ones who serve
They only get what they deserve.
The rich relationed hometown queen
Married into what she needs
A guarantee of company
And haven for the elderly.
Remember those who win the game
Lose the love they sought to gain
Indebentures of quality
And dubious integrity.
Their small town eyes will gape at you
in dull surprise when payment due
Exceeds accounts received
At seventeen.
To those of us who know the pain
Of valentines that never came,
And those whose names were never called
When choosing sides for basketball.
It was long ago and far away
The world was younger than today
And dreams were all they gave for free
To ugly duckling girls like me.
We all play the game and when we dare
To cheat ourselves at solitaire
Inventing lovers on the phone
Repenting other lives unknown
That call and say, come dance with me
and murmur vague obscenities
At ugly girls like me
At seventeen.

Mad world

Michael Andrews and Gary Jules have taken the top slot with their moving rendition of Tears for Fears classic Mad World.

They managed to sell 236,000 copies to become this year’s Christmas number one.

It’s an interesting song which has some haunting resonance for our time. Looking around the world this Christmas it does seem to be a bit of a mad place.

Am glad that they got the number one rather than some shite boy band or some pop idol has been.

Also, it only takes 236,000 copies to get to number one. The singles market is dead !

Anyway, here are the lyrics:

Tears For Fears – Mad World

All around me are familiar faces
Worn out places ? worn out faces
Bright and early for their daily races
Going nowhere ? going nowhere
Their tears are filling up their glasses
No expression ? no expression
Hide my head I want to drown my sorrow
No tomorrow ? no tomorrow

And I find it kinda funny, I find it kinda sad
The dreams in which I?m dying are the best I?ve ever had
I find it hard to tell you, I find it hard to take
When people run in circles it?s a very very
mad world mad world

Children waiting for the day they feel good
Happy birthday ? happy birthday
Made to feel the way that every child should
Sit and listen ? sit and listen
Went to school and I was very nervous
No one knew me ? no one knew me
Hello teacher tell me what?s my lesson
Look right through me ? look right through me

And I find it kinda funny, I find it kinda sad
The dreams in which I?m dying are the best I?ve ever had
I find it hard to tell you, I find it hard to take
When people run in circles it?s a very very
Mad world . . . world
Enlarge your world
Mad world

Sinatra’s My Way

my way

And now, the end is near,
And so I face the final curtain.
My friends, I’ll say it clear;
I’ll state my case of which I’m certain.

I’ve lived a life that’s full –
I’ve traveled each and every highway.
And more, much more than this,
I did it my way.

Regrets? I’ve had a few,
But then again, too few to mention.
I did what I had to do
And saw it through without exemption.

I planned each charted course –
Each careful step along the byway,
And more, much more than this,
I did it my way.

Yes, there were times, I’m sure you knew,
When I bit off more than I could chew,
But through it all, when there was doubt,
I ate it up and spit it out.
I faced it all and I stood tall
And did it my way.

I’ve loved, I’ve laughed and cried,
I’ve had my fill – my share of losing.
But now, as tears subside,
I find it all so amusing.

To think I did all that,
And may I say, not in a shy way –
Oh no. Oh no, not me.
I did it my way.

For what is a man? What has he got?
If not himself – Then he has naught.
To say the things he truly feels
And not the words of one who kneels.
Let the record show I took the blows
And did it my way.

Yes, it was my way.

**I did a cracking rendition of this song in a bad karaoke bar in Thailand once – brought the house down lol**

isn’t it nice…

It’s very nice to go trav’ling
To Paris London and Rome
It’s oh so nice to go trav’ling
But it’s so much nicer, yes it’s so much nicer, to come home

It’s very nice to just wander
The camel route to Iraq
It’s oh so nice to just wander
But it’s so much nicer, yes it’s oh so nice, to wander back

The mam’selles and frauleins, and the senoritas are sweet
But they can’t compete ’cause they just don’t have
What the models have, on Madison Ave.

It’s very nice to be footloose
With just a toothbrush and comb
It’s oh so nice to be footloose
But your heart starts singin’ when your homeward wingin’ across the foam

And you know your fate is
Where the Empire State is
All you contemplate is
The view from Miss Liberty’s dome

It’s very nice to go trav’ling
But it’s oh so nice to come home

You will find the maiden and the gay muchachas are rare
But they can’t compare with that sexy line
That parades each day at Sunset and Vine

It’s quite the life to play gypsy
And roam as Gipsies will roam
It’s quite the life to play gypsy
But your heart starts singin’ when your homeward wingin’ across the foam

And the Hudson River
Makes you start to quiver
Like the latest flivver
That’s simply dripin’ with crome

It’s very nice to go trav’ling
But it’s oh so nice to come home
